Carlos Classen

Intern

Main Project: CO2Pharm

Carlos recently completed his master's thesis in Informatics at RWTH Aachen University, working at the interface between biology, medicine, and computer science. Through research stays at CNAG-CRG in Barcelona, the University of Bristol, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, he has gained experience in human genetics, epigenetics, synthetic biology, and evolutionary genomics. His projects range from NGS pipelines and polygenic risk scores to wet-lab work with genetic circuits and field research in tropical biodiversity. He is especially drawn to the interface of synthetic and evolutionary biology: understanding how biological systems create novelty, and how the tools of modern biotechnology can help uncover and carefully redirect this potential into useful technology. Beyond the lab, he is interested in art as a way to make science more visible, accessible, and open to critical reflection.
