iGEM 2026 · Naseri Lab · HU Berlin
The International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation is the world's leading synthetic biology organisation. Each year, student teams from universities across the globe tackle real-world problems by designing, building, and testing biological systems in the lab.
Teams compete at the annual iGEM Grand Jamboree, presenting their work to expert judges and the broader synthetic biology community. iGEM promotes open science, responsible research, and a collaborative spirit worldwide.

We are the iGEM Team Berlin 2026 “Sense PFASt”, competing in the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Foundation's annual student research competition. Our project harnesses the power of synthetic biology and microbial cell factories to address an urgent real-world challenge: PFAS contamination.
PFAS are an invisible part of our everyday lives. Used in products like non-stick cookware, firefighting foam, and waterproof textiles, these so-called “forever chemicals” are valued for their durability. Yet this same persistence has become a growing environmental and public health concern, as PFAS accumulate in water, ecosystems, and living organisms. Reliable, accessible and low-cost detection remains one of the key challenges in addressing this issue.
Our Team is an interdisciplinary mix of students, working at the intersection of synthetic biology, environmental science and design. Supported by the Naseri and Lindlich labs and in exchange with leading researchers, we are part of the iGEM competition, representing the next generation of Berlin’s synthetic biologists.
With our project Sense PFASt, we aim to develop a yeast-based biosensor capable of detecting harmful PFAS compounds such as PFOA and PFOS in water in real time. By combining biological systems with practical applications in water monitoring in existing infrastructure, we strive to contribute to more transparent, responsive and wide-spread environmental management. Feel free to reach out if you are interested in details!

Human Practice LeadCompeting on the world stage of synthetic biology requires resources. Reagents, sequencing, pipettes, server and printing costs, not to mention the considerable fees of the iGEM competition itself. Also, as a new iGEM team in Berlin, we really are building our infrastructure completely from scratch, and every piece we establish now will have a lasting impact for future generations of Berlin iGEMers! With lab space, equipment, and mentorship already covered by our host institutions, every contribution translates directly into the science itself! So every bit of support, be it a €10 personal GoFundMe donation or a €5,000 sponsorship, helps us go further, work bolder, and represent Berlin with pride!

We've already managed to get an exciting team and project off the ground. Project, infrastructure, manpower and supervision wise we are all set for success. But we still desperately need your help to give our project a fighting chance in a competitive, international environment. Every contribution counts!
